Hello! Visiting from the Ichthus at Harvard - I totally agree with this post, and it's pretty much my trajectory with Lewis too, except that I stubbornly refused to read him when I was young cos my mum sold him too hard :p My own loss..I agree that A Grief Observed was heartwrenching, and helped me understand him as a person, rather than as a rockstar.

I'd also highly recommend Sheldon Vanauken's A SEVERE MERCY. The book is a "spiritual autobiography" in which Lewis plays a significant role in Vanauken's spiritual development. It's a truly remarkable book.

It wasn't until graduate school that I returned to reading Lewis. God used Mere Christianity to change my life!

Thanks Charlie for reminding me of the magic of Lewis.

Hear, hear! For an introduction to Lewis and an analysis of what his works best accomplish, I'd recommend the following from John Piper: http://www.desiringgod.org/ResourceLibrary/ConferenceMessages/ByConference/46/4503_Lessons_from_an_Inconsolable_Soul/
